Bergen County law enforcement thwarts luring attempt, charges Staten Island man
What happens when someone is arrested and charged with a crime?
When someone is arrested and charged with a crime, police departments observe a protocol that includes the reading of Miranda Rights.
A Staten Island man is facing several charges after exchanging sexual messages and inappropriate photos with a 12-year-old before appearing outside the child’s home, Bergen County authorities said.
Christopher Giglio, 34, was arrested Monday on charges including attempted sexual assault, luring and possession of child pornography, according to a press release from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
The agency’s cyber crimes unit was notified last week by a local police department that a juvenile and an adult male, later identified as Giglio, were “engaged in sexual conversations” via an online messaging application, the release stated. The two did not know each other outside of their internet correspondence.
Giglio was outside the juvenile’s home on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 11, when the child’s parent observed his vehicle idling in front of the residence, according to the release. The parents contacted local police, but Giglio fled the scene before they arrived.
Detectives from the prosecutor’s office identified Giglio as the man in question after reviewing online activity that preceded the attempted meetup. The investigation revealed Giglio had instructed the child “to expose, photograph, and send nude photos of intimate body parts,” the release stated.
An undercover detective posing as the child continued to chat online with Giglio, who maintained “sexualized conversation” in the ensuing days, the prosecutor’s office said. Giglio arranged to meet the child Monday at a predetermined location in Bergen County and was arrested by detectives when he arrived.
Giglio was charged with two counts of second-degree attempted sexual assault along with second-degree luring, third-degree child endangerment, first-degree production of child pornography and third-degree possession of child pornography. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Superior Court in Hackensack.
The investigation into Giglio is ongoing, and authorities are seeking any other children who may have been in contact with the social media accounts “Smokeyallup” or “Smokeyallup314.” Any parent or guardian who determines that their child received “inappropriate communications” from the accounts can contact the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 201-226-5532.
